David Ortiz had his first hit of the Grapefruit League season, discounting the earlier HR off the college pitcher. The question of this Spring Training at Red Sox camp is whether or not the big man can bounce back from a subpar 2009 & bring nastiness back to the #4 spot in the order. I heard a few comments on this topic that I'd like to respond to.
First, reporters are quick to jump on results from the first 5 or 10 at bats in the Spring. Relax, reporters. As long as Ortiz is getting enough plate appearances to see the ball well & make good contact, that's all he needs to do. I saw him drive a nice ball to left-center yesterday that was caught. At this stage of Spring Training pitchers are a full week ahead of the hitters.
Second, the Sox can decide not to pick-up his option in 2011. That's true. However, Big Papi advised the media that he plan to play at least 4 more years. He knows that he needs to produce in 2010 to get a contract in 2011 & beyond. Ortiz is a smart guy. I think he knows exactly what needs to be done this year to get his mind & body ready for the 2010 season.
Let's let Big Papi's bat do the talking in April. I think he's ready to party like 2004. Bring nasty back #34!
