"30 Clubs in 30 Days" is the slogun for the MLB Network. I had a chance to catch the installment on the Red Sox yesterday.
It's interesting to see how stats tell a story. The Sox had good stats last year in starting pitching, bullpen & offense. Maybe the defense was more middle-of-the pack than in the top 5 like the other categories. Looking strictly at stats, you wonder why the Sox were not in the World Series.
One stat was constant - all the numbers in the 2nd half were worse than the first half. Red Sox fans know that. A typical year is a fast start in April & May, a slow down in mid-June into the All-Star break in July, a struggling July, a rebound in August & a strong September going into the playoffs.
What the numbers didn't show is a lack of offense in the playoffs squandering several good pitching performances. They didn't show the inability to beat the Yankees & CC Sabathia in the 2nd half. They didn't show the meltdown by Pap.
Best part of the MLB Network show was seeing Hazel Mae interviewing the players & manager. We miss you at NESN, Hazel!
