8-years, $184 million. That's what the small market, small payroll team in Minnesota gave Joe Mauer to stay in a Twins uniform for the future. Is Mauer worth it?
No one, especially the average fan in this economy, can comprehend the size of contracts being offered to the best players in baseball. Mauer is one of the best. And most expect him to be one of the best catcher's ever by the time his playing days are over.
Sox fans were hoping that Mauer might go the free agency route when his contract expires at the end of this season. But being a Minnesota native & having the chance to play for the home team was too much to pass up.
Mauer will be the centerpiece for the Twins as they move to their new open-air stadium this year. It's a good baseball story that he stayed in Minnesota. (OK, all Red Sox fans are also thinking that it's good the Yankees never had a chance to get him either!)
