The trade of Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers is off for now due to needed surgery of his right thumb. Lowell is expected to miss the first 2 weeks of Spring Training. Once healthy the Red Sox & Rangers could try to reactivate the trade.
I'm interested by the fact that Texas was satisfied with Mike Lowell's progress after hip surgery. If Lowell ends up staying with the Red Sox & is healthy, he could be one of the best trades that never happened. Lowell & Youk can keep their current positions or switch corners, & Kotchman can remain a sub.
It will be interesting as to how the Sox & Lowell approach Spring Training. A little awkward, don't you think.

I'm a little disappointed that this trade didn't work out. Although the Sox really need the bat I think this trade was a move to set up the 2011 team. The moves and non-moves the Red Sox have made this year appear to me to be a two step process to revamp the team roster.
Theo seems to be trying to let go of some of the older players and contracts and letting the younger (now veteran) players of the team rise up. My two concerns for next year are Big Papi's and Mike Lowell's health and thus productivity.
Our pitching staff looks great, and we have center, first and second covered, but who's going to drive in the runs. Next year could be an AL east Sox team that feels very NL. We'll just have to see.
