Gonzo Is Gone

Alex Gonzalez is no longer an option for the Red Sox for 2010. Gonzo signed a 1-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for $2.75 million with an option for 2011.

An addition to the team at the trade deadline, Gonzalez helped the Sox reach the playoffs in 2009 with his steady play at shortstop. His offense was also better than expected. But the Red Sox chose not to activate his $6 million option, thus making him a free agent.

It's a case of deja vu all over again. We keep looking for a new shortstop every year, so why should 2010 be any different. Nomar, Cabrera, Renteria, Gonzalez, Lugo, Lowrie & Gonzalez are the names since 2004. I have heard the name of Marco Scutaro tossed around for 2010, but I hope we find a better option than him.

I trust that Theo had a plan for shortstop when he didn't re-sign Gonzo. We just don't know what it is yet.
