The formula for reaching the playoffs in the AL East comes down to a magic number -- 95 wins. 95 is the number of wins that typically assures a team of a playoff birth.
How do you get to 95? If history is correct, it happens by playing .500 ball for about 4 months out of 6. One or two games above .500 is what the Red Sox did in April, June, July & August. The rest of the formula is to have 2 real good months. This year those months were May (10 games above .500) & currently September. 95 wins, 67 losses, 28 games above .500 = playoffs.
The Sox have 89 wins with 14 games left -- 7 on the road & 7 at home. With their magic number to clinch a spot at 7, even a 7-7 final 2 weeks will get them back into the playoffs.
The math is looking good.
