The Red Sox have decided to roll the dice over the last 14 games of this season. They did the same thing in 2004 & that worked out pretty well. The Sox are resting their pitching staff & setting the rotation for the playoffs by allowing Tim Wakefield & Paul Byrd to make the first 2 starts in Kansas City.
Risky? Somewhat. With 14 games left the Sox magic number remains at 7. If you factor in a loss or two by Texas, the Sox can play sub .500 ball & still make the playoffs. But 2 straight losses to the Royals reminds me that it's not over until it's over.
Last night's game was over in the first inning when Byrd allowed 5 runs. Zack Greinke looked Cy Young worthy last night, shutting out the Red Sox on 1 hit over 6 innings. It was a mismatch of starters, so the result was not surprising. It does magnify, however, the loss on Monday night.
Look for Josh Beckett to right the ship tonight.
