Beckett, Ortiz Pace Sox in 9-2 Win

It was win #90 on the season last night as the Sox got good pitching & hitting to beat the KC Royals 9-2. The Red Sox magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 5 with 11 games to go.

Josh Beckett gave up 2 runs over the first 6 innings. The bullpen of Okajima, Wagner & Papelbon closed the door thereafter. Beckett allowed 12 hits, but only 2 runners scored.

David Ortiz had 4 RBI, including a 3-run homer, to move him up to 88 RBI on the year. Even with his ups & downs, Ortiz will finish the season with 25+ homers & 90+ RBI. Not bad for 4 months of work after a poor April & May. We can use him with a hot bat in the playoffs.

Speaking of playoffs, it was a playoff lineup that Francona put out there last night. Lowell at third, Youk at first, Victor catching, Varitek on the bench. A number of sports reporters thought that this was inevitable with Varitek. I agree & I applaud Tito for putting the team first.
