Varitek Blocks Home In Win

OK, I'm one of the guys that likes Jason Varitek on the bench more than on the field. I think the combination of Lowell, Youk, Victor & Big Papi give us more offense & a better chance to win a game.

In the interest of fairness you have to applaud the block of home plate last night by Varitek to save an important run. In a 6-5 comeback win against the Blue Jays that block was the play of the game to me.

Varitek was in perfect position to take a great relay throw from Gonzalez. The runner arrived a tad before the throw, but Varitek held his ground, kept his left foot anchored in front of the plate, took the throw, then went back & tagged the runner. Text book catching 101.

Varitek & Martinez make a good catching tandem. As it stands now, Victor will catch 3-4 times a week & play 1B or DH the other days. Varitek will catch the other 2-3 days which seems to be a perfect mix. Both get rest & stay fresh.

I give Jason Varitek his dues for contributing to an important win last night that lengthened the Wild Card lead over both the Rangers & Rays.
