A day after a crushing defeat, the Boston Red Sox struck back at A.J. Burnett & the Yankees with a 14-1 drubbing of the AL East leaders. This win sets up a classic matchup tomorrow as Josh Beckett & C.C. Sabathia each try to win the rubber game.
Burnett was tagged early & often, giving up 3 home runs & 7 earned runs in 6 innings. Youk went yard twice & Big Papi added a 3rd to left central which left Burnett talking to himself on the mound. A.J. was not up to the task of winning a key game against a revitalized Red Sox offense that scored 14 today & 11 yesterday. Burnett may remember that when we see him in the ALCS. Yes, I said it, ALCS.
Tazawa, on the other hand, exceeded all expectations. He worked around 8 hits over 6 innings & got key outs when he needed them. You can ask more of a kid in a Yankees-Red Sox series. It must have been a redemption of sorts for Tazawa after giving up the 15th inning HR to A-Rod at Yankee Stadium. Tazawa may have made a case to keep him as the 5th starter.
Big, big win after a depressing loss. It makes for great drama on Sunday night. There really is no other rivalry in sports like Red Sox & Yankees.
