Mike Lowell wasn't in the starting lineup last night. He did play, however, after Kevin Youkilis got hit by Porcello, charged the mound & got thrown out of the game. Lowell made the most of his opportunity by hitting 2 home runs, driving in 3 RBI & leading the Red Sox to a 7-5 win.
When I was coaching we use to put our best offensive team out in the field to start a game, then bring in defensive players at the end. I'm surprised that Francona hasn't done more of that with Lowell. Start Lowell, bring Kotchman in late in the game & move Youk to third. But Tito has quite a juggling match on his hands.
Youk will surely get fined & miss a few games for his mini-brawl. Expect Lowell to see more regular playing time when that happens. I'm surprised that we haven't seen more Lowell & less Big Papi & Jason Varitek to bolster the offense. Both Varitek & Ortiz are slumping. I think Victor Martinez could use a day off as well.
However the rotation of players works, it's nice to have a Mike Lowell on your team.
