As the Red Sox invade the unfriendly confines of the Trop in Tampa Bay, they won't have to worry about facing Scott Kazmir anymore. In an unusual move, the Rays sent Kazmir to the Angels for 2 draft picks.
Scott Kazmir, a young kid still barely 25, was the one & only quality pitcher for the Rays rotation in his early years. He was among the league leaders in strikeouts at 20 years old. Kazmir always seemed to pitch well against the Red Sox, so we are not sad to see him go.
The Rays PR people are saying that the move was made to save $22 million in salary over the next 2 years. Others, outside of Tampa, are saying that the Rays have waived the white flag in the Wild Card race. I'm not buying the white flag theory, especially with Shields & Garza still in the rotation. The Rays like to keep their payroll down, so I'm going with dropping a big salary.
The Angels, obviously, hope that Kazmir can lend an arm in the playoffs to help beat the Yankees & Red Sox. Time will tell.
