Is Big Papi Out of Slump?

For a guy that wasn't in the starting line-up, David Ortiz hit pretty well last night. A bases-loaded double on a tough pitch from Romero & a solo home run to right center for a total of 3 RBI. He was one of several Sox batters that brought their hitting shoes to the Rogers Centre & scored 10 runs. They needed all of them in a 10-9 win.

When Pedroia comes back from being a new dad the Sox have a strong 1 thru 8 in the line-up with Varitek out & Gonzalez hitting 9th. The player rotation used by Francona should see Varitek with less time if Big Papi keeps contributing out of the 6th or 7th hole. Varitek has an injured neck which may keep him out anyway.

A contributing Ortiz, MIA for the bulk of this season, can be a great catalyst for the Sox down the stretch. Like Buchholz with the passing of the trade deadline, maybe Ortiz can relax now that the steroids issue has been addressed & is behind him (for now).

We need positive signs. I'll believe that Big Papi is coming out of his slump as my sign for today.

One game doesn't mean a thing. I hope you are right, but it is like declaring someone a lifetime 400 hitter after he goes 2 for 5 in his first game. I would like to see a good performance over at least a week or eve 2 before I will declare the slump over. SB
