Brad Penny Released

As expected, Brad Penny was given his release when Billy Wagner was added to the 25-man roster. Penny's numbers had been going downhill at a critical point in the season. He became expendable when Tim Wakefield showed no ill effects from his stint on the DL.

I think Brad Penny gave the Sox several excellent starts in the first half of the season. At the same time Penny has fully rehabbed his shoulder & is again throwing mid & upper 90's on a regular basis. He should catch on with another team pretty quickly.

Unlike the Smoltz experiment, Penny's was more successful. I know -- Smoltz struckout 9 for the Cardinals. Did you see the pitches the Padres batters were swinging for? Big difference in hitting styles in the National vs. American League. When Beckett & Lester were struggling early it was Penny & Wakefield that provided most of the wins.

Thanks, Brad, for keeping us in contention. Good luck wherever you land.
