It was one of those losses that you can point back to at the end of the regular season if the Red Sox finish 1 game behind the Yankees. Leads of 6-2 & 7-4 disappeared with 3 runs in the 9th by the A's to tie the game 7-7 in regulation. The A's scored 2 in the 11th to win 9-8.
Other than Buchholz & Bard, the relief core from the 7th inning on was inneffective. Ramirez, Okajima, Papelbon, Saito & Delcarmen all gave up runs. It was group underachievement to the A's who pounded out 20+ hits. Shoddy fielding by Nick Green in the 9th contributed to the loss as well.
When the Red Sox score 7 runs at home you expect them to win. The Yankees lost to Tampa Bay, further exacerbating this loss, which a win would have moved the Sox to just 1-1/2 behind.
The Sox are just 11-11 in the month of July & struggling for consistentcy. Maybe a significant trade is needed to get some life back. We'll know in 3 days what Theo thinks.
