John Smoltz is making a patient man impatient. Terry Francona may have to re-think his philosophy about Smoltz after another poor outing today which saw the Orioles defeat the Sox 6-2. All 6 runs came in 5 innings off of Smoltz.
The lack of an effective Smoltz also means that Theo & Co. may have to re-think trading Buchholz or Penny for a needed bat before the trade deadline on Friday. Of the 2, Penny has the bigger body of work to judge. His last start on Friday was excellent -- 7 innings, 1 run. Buchholz has also been effective in his 2 starts with the big club since the All-Star break.
Where do the Sox go from here with Smoltz? He is scheduled to pitch again on Friday in Baltimore. Another ineffective effort may relegate him to the bullpen when Tim Wakefield returns from the DL.

I am still more concerned that the hitters continue to make both rookie and journeyman hitters into Cy Young candidates.
