Smoltz Gets Help From Bard

The Sox are up 9-1 early & end up winning 16-9 against the KC Royals. John Smoltz gives up 1 run over the first 5 innings to earn his first win in a Red Sox uniform. He must have gotten a little edgy when Delcarmen, Masterson & Okajima finished the 6th inning with a scant 9-7 lead.

Thank goodness for Daniel Bard who pitched the 7th & 8th, bringing sanity back to the game. Bard is being used in more important innings these last few outings. The Sox scored multiple times in the 8th, allowing Saito to finish off the game in the 9th.

Balls were flying all over the park. However, a win is a win. Starting today 2 games up on the Yankees, we know that first place is ours alone at the unofficial halfway mark for the All-Star break. It's going to be quite a 2nd half battle.
