Martinez & Kotchman to Boston

No question that the Red Sox did more than any other AL East team to improve their ballclub for the stretch run. Victor Martinez & Casey Kotchman come to Boston while Justin Masterson & Adam LaRoche leave.

Thank you. I have been saying all along that Victor solves several pieces for the Red Sox in one fell swoop. He is a more-than-adequate catcher to spell Varitek who is beat up physically. He can play 1B, if needed, to spell Lowell. And he is a middle of the order guy who can also DH to help pick-up some of the offensive slack. I got to see Victor a lot this year in Spring Training & he is just a smooth customer. He is a rock star. Victor will love Boston.

In addition, don't discount Casey Kotchman as an important piece to the puzzle. If both Varitek & Lowell go down, Kotchman is a dirt dog at 1B that always played well against the Red Sox, whether for the Angels or Braves. He is also a nice bat off the bench. LaRoche was never going to be happy as a part-time guy.

On the flip side, it's sad to see a classy kid like Justin Masterson go. He has the right attitude in seeing a new door open to his career in Cleveland. Instead of a spare part, he becomes an integral part of their starting pitching core. Good luck, Justin. You are one classy person.

Let the games begin for the final 1/3 of the season. Theo, you did good!
