As MLB tries to go global (remember the Red Sox opening series in Japan last year), we again have the messed up Spring Training schedule in 2009 to accomodate the World Baseball Classic.
Is this a good idea for players important to their teams with multi-million dollar contracts? Position players need to ramp up their preparation to face live pitching. Pitchers need to accelerate their throwing program to pitch more innings sooner. I remember Mike Timlin being hurt for most of the season last time he played in the Classic.
Youk & Pedroia are playing for Team USA. Ortiz may play for DR if his wrist is healthy. (How many Sox fans are happy about that?) Lowell will skip playing for PR to continue rehabbing his hip. Thank you, Mike.
MLB owners may regret this beauty pagent for extra merchandising dollars if enough big names get injured.
