The Yankees continue their own bailout plan spending as they ink an 8 year, $180 million deal with Mark Teixeira. Teixeira joins the new money given to CC Sabathia & AJ Burnett. The Yankees better sellout that new stadium to pay for these guys.
I was OK either way with how the Sox persued Teixeira. Now that it's over, I hope that Mike Lowell returns to health & has a monster year. Keep JD Drew & Big Papi healthy as well & we can compete with anyone in the AL East.
Sometimes the deals that don't get made are the best ones.

Professional athletes are comodities that are bought, sold and traded. Therefore I have no problem with Teixeira going to the Yanks for the money just like I had no problem with Damon going there. You and I are the fans however for the clubs and players this is a business like any other.
For the Red Sox I believe this is a good thing. While Teixeira is a great player 8 year contracts only protect the player, leaving the club possibly on the hook for a complacent star or an injured star. Don't forget Kevin Brown made Detroit bailout money for simply staying alive as he sure wasn't pitching for years.
Mike Lowell is getting up there in age but I'll stack our starting three plus our infield against the Yanks any day!!! The Sox and Yanks will play 19 times this coming year and all this money did for New York was, best case, get them the 10-9 edge in a 162 game season.
In conclusion, good luck to all, no hard feelings to anyone and I'm really looking forward to the 2009 campaign. Merry Christmas all and Happy New (Red Sox) Year.
The Yankees are like the winter in New Hampshire-very predictable. It will always snow in New Hampshire in the winter and the Yankees will always throw money at players to try and win. I guess if you charge $2500 for a seat behind home plate then you better put some entertainment on the field.Who would want to see a foreclosure sign on Yankee Stadium? I would.
I know Big Papi needs someone with a big bat hitting behind him, however since we have the league MVP and Youk and when a few others comeback healthy like Big Papi, Beckett and Lowell we will be in good shape.
Winning generates ticket sales usually. But the real question is given the sad state of the US economy is will families be able to still afford to see a major league game. Like the CEO's of the auto industry it is time to label major league baseball players and owners as "shameful". I wonder when they will be calling Congress for a bailout. A line in the monetary sand should have been drawn a long time ago. I live for the day that fans boycott MLB games. I love the game but the baseball business is clearly out of wack!!!!!!!!! gaff
The Yankees haven't always spent the big bucks every offseason. Take a look at the 90's dynasty teams. The big bucks weren't tossed around until after they came within 1 out of their fourth series win in a row. They have always kept their homegrown players and paid them well. What fan wouldn't want an owner shelling out his cash to bring in top players. The Sox have done it.......MANNY being Manny! It seems like the Sox ownership only complains about the money issue when they lose out to the Yanks in free agent signings. Let's complain about KC or Pittsburgh....teams where owners pocket the extra cash coming from the Yankees and...... yes the Sox too. jb
