The offense spread it around with hits from 8 different players. Tim Wakefield pitched on guts through the first 5 innings in his return from the DL. The bullpen added 4 more innings of shutout relief. The lone dark spot in a Red Sox win in the Bronx -- Manny Delcarmen.
After 5 months of up & down performances I think it's time for Tito to move Masterson into the 7th inning role & move Delcarmen out. Even with a 4-run lead last night, Delcarmen walked 2 batters to load the basis & had to come out. Command is not there on a consistent basis. It hasn't been since a May-June stretch of 13 scoreless innings.
Even in the 11th inning on Sunday in Toronto, Delcarmen walked a batter before getting a "K" on a 3-2 pitch to end it. If I can feel the doubt every time Delcarmen comes into a tight ballgame, I'm sure Tito feels it too. Lopez, Masterson, Okajima & Papelbon are all better choices at this point.
Let's see how Tito uses Delcarmen during the last 31 games.
