Paul Byrd got his 1st Red Sox win. Good for him...
He is a guy who will give up 4 runs a game as a #5 starter. Some games the Red Sox offense will score more than 4. Some games not. But Byrd was the best answer out there for a #5 starter, given the demise of Clay Buchholz.
The offense, led by Jason Varitek (yes Jason Varitek) & Dustin Pedroia, gave Byrd 8 runs tonight to take the 1st game of the series against Toronto. Given that Toronto has had their way with the Red Sox this year, a win at the Rogers Center is huge at this stage of the season. With Lester pitching tomorrow we have a chance to win a second consecutive road series. Not bad for a team which has been way under .500 on the road this year.
Maybe the Red Sox are hitting their stride at the right time. They need to pick-up 1 game in the standings per week to overcome the Rays for 1st place. It's not out of the question...
